How to Believe in God

God and nature

How to believe in God? Whatever your religion is, as long as it is a pure religion based on love and charity, you need to have faith and belief in God. Most Christians and other religious people will tell you that in order to save your soul, you just need to accept God and believe in Him. I agree, but though it sounds simple, it definitely not that easy. Saying that “the answer to enter in the Kingdom of Heaven is to believe in God” is just like saying that “the answer to go to Las Vegas from Tokyo is to ride on an airplane”. Well, that answer is correct, but it is also too broad. Broad answers can become misleading and become prone to misapplications. Thus, we need to be more specific and accurate. Yes, it’s an airplane that can bring us to America from Asia. However, there are still many questions that we must answer with regard to riding a plane. What kind of airplane? Where is the airport and how to get there? Where to buy a ticket? What is the time of flight? What are the documents required for travelling? What is the cost of airfare? How to ride on an airplane? These are only some of the things that we need to learn to successfully arrive at our destination.

Assuring your belief in God
Just like an airplane, belief is the answer to go to God’s place. And just like an airplane, we must also specify and reassure the accuracy of our belief. Thus, we also need to answer the following questions. What kind of belief? Where to acquire it? What are the sacrifices we need to obtain it? How to believe in God? In seeking for the answers on those questions, we will find that we need to have a strong and powerful belief in God, it must be based on true faith and love, it must be obtained through constant work and service in Him, and it must produce patience, humility, peace, self-control and joy. Hence, we will know a man who keeps on believing in God, if he has earned patience, peacefulness, gentleness, faithfulness, love, joy and self-control. Hypocrisy will only cover a man who says he believes in God, but doesn’t possess those virtues with him.

To see is to believe
To believe in God, you need to see God. However, this doesn’t mean you need to see Him though your physical eyes. God is a spirit and He is seen through your purest heart. Didn’t the Bible said that “blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God? Most naturalists and physicists don’t believe in God for they don’t see God. They don’t believe because they don’t see God physically, as well as spiritually. We should take note that it’s not only our eyes that see things. We can also see things right through our minds and through our hearts. Don’t you tell yourself “Oh I see” when you start to realize things you previously don’t understand? Don’t you feel joy when you start experiencing true love? When you realize and understand things, this is the time that your mind sees. When you start to justify things, this is the time that your heart sees. Therefore to believe in God is to spiritually see Him. To spiritually see God is to understand Him through your mind and justify Him through your heart.

Conclusion
Believing in God is justifying Him through our purified hearts. We purify our hearts by living the ways of God (that is living through love, peace, joy and the like). We can only justify Him if we understand Him. Moreover, we can only understand Him if we know Him. We will know Him if we listen to Him. We can listen to Him if we will ask Him. We can ask Him if we will talk to Him. We can talk to Him if we will face Him. Finally, we can face Him, if we will go back to Him. Believing in God is a long road and a hard process. It’s like that because He wants us to produce love, humility and patience. It cannot be quick and easy. Therefore, you should be starting now.

Don’t search God as if He’s lost. God is never lost; He’s always there where you have left Him.

  1. I believe in God. It is not because I have seen Him physically, I believe Him because I felt He is always there when I pray, when I talk to Him, when I cry out to Him for help. I believe He is all-powerful, omniscient, omnipresent. He is loving, merciful, forgiving, and sinners who want to turn to Him, He will not reject.

  2. Hi Lyn,

Thanks for the visit. I’m happy that you believe in God. BTW, I want to share the following verses from the Bible:

“that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us.” -Hebrews 6:18 (NKJV)

“God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands.” -
    Acts 17:24 (NKJV)

  3. I truly do wish to believe in God, but I cannot bring myself to. A possible reason for that is, for 19 years, I did not believe. I made it through some tough things without belief in any God, without ever “seeing” any proof of God, in my mind’s eye, my heart’s eye, or my true eye. But… somewhere, in my heart, I want to believe. I just don’t know how.
